With fourteen neighborhoods in the city center and ninety-six villages in the countryside, Akhisar is the most populous district of Manisa outside the city center, and the one hundred and thirty-eighth most populous district of Turkey, with a population of 177,419. The city, established on the Akhisar Plain in the Central Gediz Basin, is neighbored by Gölmarmara to the south, Saruhanlı to the southwest, Aliağa district of İzmir to the west, Sındırgı district of Balıkesir to the north, Kırkağaç and Soma to the northwest, and Gördes to the east. With a surface area of 1645 km², Akhisar is the district with the largest surface area in Manisa. The most important source of income of the district is agriculture. Other economic activities of the district include industry and trade based on raw materials. While 47% of the district's land is used as agricultural land, olive and grape production is mostly carried out on these lands.
